Wisconsin Leading The Way

First, Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin refused the federal handout for high-speed rail. Now he is championing the removal of collective bargaining for the public unions in the state. Today's vote should accomplish that. A committee approved it yesterday, setting up almost certain passage today.

Reversing landmark legislation in 1959, today's action will set the stage for what the other states all need to do. It is largely the pensions and health care benefits that are in labor agreements for teachers and public workers that have pushed Illinois, California, and many other states to the brink of bankruptcy.

This bill also calls for public employees to contribute 50% of the costs of their pension plan and 12.6% of their health insurance coverage.

Ending the gravy train for public workers is a gigantic step in the right direction. Congratulations Wisconsin for leading the way.

Wisconsin teachers have protested this by calling in sick yesterday and today with plans to continue tomorrow. Ronald Reagan had the right idea with the air traffic controllers. If they don't want to teach, we can find replacements.
