Being in business today is more than just showing up

Let's face it. Being a Realtor or new home salesperson hasn't always been as challenging as is today. There's no reason that it shouldn't have been except that it was easy for many people to just mail it in.

The best, most successful salespeople have always done what others are just now finding out is required to be successful.

Tools that always been available such as networking and self-prospecting have been set aside in favor of more easy ways of doing business such as just sitting back and waiting for the phone to ring or for the newspaper ad to bring in traffic.

We have gotten too dependent on shortcuts and technology such as virtual tours and blogging - post it to the internet and sit back and wait.

The open houses have become too much work so we rationalize not doing them by figuring that they really don't generate that much interest anyway - yet it only takes one lead to find a buyer, a new listing, or a good referral.

We don't want to take the time to work our market areas or go meet people so we use direct mail to reach hundreds of people at a time - along with hundreds of other agents with the same approach.

Real estate sales was never designed to be easy or for just dabbling - something to do on the side, part-time just for some easy extra income.

Real estate sales is full-time. In fact, to be really good it's more than full-time. It's a pursuit. It's the feeling that we never really know enough. That there's something more we can learn or something more we can do to be even better. Another book or article to read. Another course to take. Another webinar or podcast to listen to.

Being in real estate sales is something to be proud of. We help people achieve their dreams.

If this current tightening in the business climate has done anything, it has been a wake-up call to those of us who really are committed to our profession, and it's caused those who only wanted to show up to find something else to do.
