Where Is A Good Leader When You Need One?

The oil spill in the Gulf demonstrates many things. However. contrary to the President's agenda and wishfu,l but erroneous, conclusion, it does not mean that drilling in the Gulf or any other waters is bad - or that it has to be suspended or stopped. It just means that it comes with a risk. So do most things in life.

After 6 weeks of floundering and not giving the American public any confidence that this spill is being managed correctly - or that there is a foreseeable end to the leak, we can draw two obvious conclusions:

(1) The President was ill-equipped to manage a natural disaster - one that he should have known would come at some time (or even more than once) during his 4-year term). Wishing him to be a better leader won't make him one. He is what he is - and so is his team.

(2) BP had no scenario in place for such an occurrence. Leaks, spills, and explosions happen in the mining business. The best they can come up with is a series of more and more risky, unproven techniques? They should have been able to open the manual that contained this particular scenario and run the procedure.

Speaking of natural disasters, the President totally blew the Nahville and western Tennessee flood. No leadership or management here. Not even a visit. And to make matters worse, the EPA is sticking to their new Lead Paint rules - further exacerbating a bad situation.

We see no leadership from the President and no leadership from BP. We see no advance preparation. We see a sluggish response. We see no clear cut solution.

To be fair to the President though, he does have a lot on his plate. Besides the flood and the spill, he's got Sestak, the "Peace" flotilla, the Greek financial collapse and riots, lashing out at Arizona for doing his work, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Israel, and North Korea - just for starters.

You Know The President Is Messing Up When ...

You know the President is messing up when the cheerleader for the Democratic Party, James Carville, blasts his "lackadaisical" and "hands-offy" approach to the Gulf oil spill.

James didn't mince any words on a recent ABC interview with George Stephanapolous.

George said the President was going to be going to the area tday, but it's actually tomorrow that he'll be making just his second visit to the area since the exlosion and resulting oil spill.

This is a little longer video than I typically like to share (it's 5 minutes), but I think you'll enjoy James' energy and passion in speaking out on the weak Presidential response and lack of leadership.

What Aren't They Telling Us?

It's a different breaking story each day - to keep us off guard and looking at the news of the day instead of what is going on behind the scenes. To be sure, plenty is going on in the background - we just don't get to see it until it's almost too late to respond.

A few instances. The Times Square bomber. He acted alone. A misguided sole angry at the US over something. Then we learn he has ties to the Middle East. Then we almost let him get away. What's the backstory here? This is another foreign sponsored terrorist attempt. It was anything but an isolated incident, and he is not a "lone wolf" - as they liked to refer to him.

Remember the Ft. Hood shootings? What was the first pronouncement - within seconds of the shooting? They told us that they had ruled out a terrorist act when in fact that's what it was.

The Nashville flood didn't even make the Washington breaking news. Much more important things going on.

We still have this persistent oil leak in the Gulf that Louisiana and commercial fishermen are very concerned about. Not much news out of Washington - almost as if they didn't care. And the public and the press seem satisfied with this posture. Even environmental groups are not storming Washington over this. Compare to the outcry over Katrina.

Now the oil executives are going to appear before Congress for hearings on what went wrong - as if they knew. They certainly don't know how to stop the leak. Maybe Congress can tell them.

Then there is this big overblown reaction to the Arizona illegal immigration act by Eric Holder. He wants to sue the State. Many more States are lining up to pass similar legislation. Why doesn't he do his job of enforcing the laws on the books instead of trying to deflect responsibility for his woeful performance in this area?

And Holder now wants to loosen the Miranda requirements for questioning terrorists. Why do they get prtection from out legal system anyway instead of bewing dispatched to Gitmo? Oh that's right, Holder already made that decision earlier.

Then toss in a little story like $6 billion for a "Cash for Clunkers" style program for home renovations to supposedly save energy.

Need one more item that just keeps taking the spotlight off of the President's agenda? He announces his appointment for the Supreme Court. This gets every cable news (I don't watch network news) channel; talking about nothing else all day. Mission accomplished. Keep the focus off of other issues - especially since there is no way she can't be confirmed and Justice Stevens hasn't formally retired yet. All very much premature but designed to keep us from looking behind the curtain.

How Convenient

First the President asked General McChrystal for an assessment of Afghanistan prior to the decision he needed to make about prosecuting the war. That was clear back in August. Then then were meetings, feet-dragging, more meetings, and promises of a decision "in the coming weeks."

Then there was that meaningful 30-minute meeting with McChrystal in Denmark that was squeezed in during the Olympics' sales pitch for Chicago to host the 2016 Games.

Then there was a video conference at the White House. Then probably more meetings that we don't know about.

Oh, and the delay for the Afghan runoff election - before it was canceled.

Yesterday, the President was said to be considering 4 options.

Today, we are back to the drawing board. He's thrown them all out. Three months of dilly-dallying out the window. How convenient to have all of these excuses.

If there is a serious, honest reason for not making a decision, then tell us what it is. You don't have to go into detail, but tell us why you can't make the decision and what the determining factor is. Short of that, make the decision already.
