This story has two lessons for us.
During NBC's broadcast of the US Open golf tournament, they produced and aired - what was supposed to be - a very patriotic opening. It featured scenes from our military and national landmarks and had children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance - twice. Both times, the phrase "under God" added by Congress at the urging of President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954 was noticeably missing.
The commentators offered a weak apology about 3 hours into the broadcast "to those of you who were offended by it."
Congress demanded an explanation, and today NBC issued an apology to Congress.
NBC said that this was not intentional and that it had been done independently by a small group of people producing the video.
They said those people had been reprimanded and promised that this would never happen again.
Lesson 1. A few people can counter the will of the people and get away with asserting their own agenda if not challenged.
Lesson 2. By speaking up we can make a difference and redress wrongs that have occurred or those in the offing.
Good for NBC for getting to the bottom of this and that it was not their intention to air such an offensive piece. One has to wonder why no one caught this eggregious mistake before it aired, however.
