Today is a day without precedent in Palm Beach County - a special tax is actually disappearing from the books. We all know that once a tax is enacted that government finds a way to maintain it even when the original purpose is gone. Not this time!
Six years ago voters were misled into adopting a ½ percent local option sales tax to finance new school construction. This was right at the height of the housing boom but not called for or necessary anyway. Most of the money has been spent on demolishing and rebuilding old schools than on building new schools. Besides they had the impact fees from builders which at the time they weakly threatened a building moratorium. That would have hurt them more than anyone else. In the past 2 years, however, the school population has been decreasing.
At any rate, the ½ percent extra sales tax expires today. May we never approve any local option tax again - for anything.
