For years we have been talking about building more nuclear power plants in this country. We haven't gotten one stepper closer than just talking about them, but we certainly have done that.
Now Germany has announced that by 2021 all of their nuclear plant will be closed. They plans on keeping 3 ready for emergency backup, but the others will go.
They cite safety concerns - issues that were not present until the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Didn't realize that Germany had that many tsunamis.
If nuclear is good enough for a backup source, then why close them down? Seems like a over-reaction to events that probably don't impact Germany at all.
If the design is good - and that might be a whole different issue - don't see what they can't continue. They want to move away from nuclear for "renewable" sources - which at present are limited.
So are we moving forward with clean, reasonably priced nuclear electricity - or should we be abandoning what we have also?
