We all knew it was coming - an over-reaction by Congress or the Administration. Sen. Joe Lieberman struck first. Fortunately Joe is retiring next year. With insight like he is voicing now, November 2012, can't come soon enough.
Joe is proposing a ban on all future nuclear energy development in this country. And why not? A devastatingly severe eathquake and accompanying tsunami damaged a reactor and caused an explosion. That's just the kind of thing that could happen here - not. Besides the main issue is cooling. The reactor did its part to contain the energy.
Every pundit is rushing to describe the consequences of the nuclear facilities "failing" and "melting down." They talk about the use of sea water as a "last resort" to emphasize what they feel is the serious nature of a pending meltdown because the seawater would essentially permanently disable the facility.
Depending on which news account you follow, there has already been a meltdown with no extensive radiation leak. Other sources describe it as a possibility. The one thing that is being overlooked is the fact that Japan planned to decommission the affected facility last month. Thus seawater or anything else they do to impact the plant is moot as the 40-year old facility should already have been mothballed.
Seems to me that Japan has had several severe earthquakes in the past 40 years with no nuclear plant "incidents." Seems to me that we could locate plants in this country well enough inland to be away from tsunami or storm surges from hurricanes. Seems to me that we could locate nuclear plants away from know fault areas.
Nothing in life is risk-free, but to give up and say no more nuclear is to admit defeat in the energy independence battle.
We've already ruled out domestic oil drilling, offshore oil drilling, coal mining, and wind farms (due their noise, inefficiency, low tolerance for high winds, and local climate change). Besides solar, there aren't many other options.
