I don’t know that there's any truth to this, but there sure could be.
Just imagine. The people who read the news on air show up for their daily shift and have their planning meeting. They get some of their stories to rehearse and then they go to work to see how many times they can use various words in their story.
Words like crash, collapse, crisis, recession, great depression, housing crisis, mortgage mess, credit crunch, bank failures, bankruptcies, foreclosures.
Some words are worth some really serious bonuses because they are emotionally charged. Other get scale because people just expect to hear them. There's also a bonus for the person who uses the most negative words in a single story.
And here we thought they just enjoyed using negative words and scaring people – it turns out it may actually pay for them to talk this way.
Like I said, I have no proof, but who knows?
