Talladega Teamwork

For the start of today's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Talladega Speedway in Alabama, the Rick Hendrick team could not be better positioned.

For the first time in recent memory (for me), a big organization has all of their cars in the top starting positions.

Rick Hendrick Motors has all four of their drivers in the first four starting positions: Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, and Dale Earnhardt, Jr., in that order.

If Talledega is going to be a repeat of Daytona with the tandem racing, Hendrick certainly has a great opportunity from the start. Of course a lot can happen in 499 miles.

NASCAR Gets More Competitive

In new rules announced for this season which begins President's Day weekend, NASCAR has made the racing much more competitive. Should make for a much closer points race in all 3 series.

The biggest change is that a driver can only compete - not drive, but compete - in one series. This will keep all of the Cup drivers from taking places away from the Camping World and Nationwide series. No more capturing all 3 races in a weekend.

There are only 48 points maximum available for a driver per race now instead of the 158 like past years. They get 43 points for winning, 42 for second, and so forth. For leading a lap one point instead of 5, for the most laps lead one point instead of 5, and 3 bonus points for the win.

The top 10 drivers in points after 26 races will still go to the 10 race chace, but the 11th and 12th spots will go to second tier of 10 drivers with the most total wins in the first 26 races. Don't know what will happen in the case of a tie.

Should make the season more interesting. It's going to take consistent performances to stay near the top, but it's possible to stay in the hunt just from doing well and never winning.

Jimmie Ends Winless Streak on Road Courses

Lowe's Team 48 and driver Jimmie Johnson had never won a road race - until today. Besides leading several laps - actually the most laps for a 10 point bonus - he lead the lap that counted. He took the checkered flag on lap 110 to end his winless streak on road courses and get back in the winner's circle for the first time since the spoiler was reintroduced in favor of the rear wing.

Congratulations Team 48 and an early Father's Day present for Jimmie!

48 For 48

Jimmie Johnson drove his Lowe's Chevrolet to Victory Lane today at the Auto Club 500 in Fontana, California.

It was Jimmie's 48th career victory in the Cup series - in just 9 seasons - so 48 for 48.

He has now won at least one race in each of his 9 seasons, and he is going for a 5th consecutive series championship this season. It's a long season, but this is good - especially after last week's time problems at Daytona and a 35th place finish.
