Following The Script

Had a chance to catch a little of the broadcast this afternoon on the NASA channel as they get ready for today's planned launch of Discovery. The planning, the checks, the re-checks, the checklists, the redundency - all planned and all part of the program to ensure safety and success.

While what we do bears little resemblance to the space program in terms of scope or safety, it bears noting that a little - or maybe even a lot - of planning ahead of time can make things run very smoothly when it comes tome to implement them.

Even when there is an issue (in our case think of a buyer's question or objection) they are so well rehearsed and practiced that they can respond to it without hesitation or worry - or they can determine what steps to take based on their preparation if it's something new.

Just another lesson we can take away from the space program.

There's a reason our space program has been so successful. It seems a shame to abandon ship, pay the Russians to do what we are so good at already, and give up thousands of jobs.

Poor Choice Of Metaphors

In tonight's State of the Union address, the President had no trouble recalling how we had answered the Russian's challenge to enter the space race and how we had sparked American ingenuity and creativity with the space program. Why then did he pull the plug on much of NASA's work and cause the loss of thousands of jobs?

This President did all but shut down the Kennedy Space Center before adding back one Shuttle flight and providing limited funding for another program.

If the space program was that good - and it was actually even better than that producing all of the computer technology and many other scientifc advancements we now enjoy in consumer products - why cut it? When then single it out as an an example of American superiority and accomplishment when you're not willing to support it?

Forget the WPA-type projects and the high-speed rail which is both impractical and ridiculously inefficient. Lets back the space program.

He wants scientists and engineers. Give then a career path.
