A Mostly All New Congress Is Not That Far-Fetched

For weeks, I have been talking about replacing the entire Congress and have received quite a bit of agreement on the idea from others. I also realize that this is easier said than done.

However, it may not be a difficult as what it would appear.

Here’s the facts.

There are 100 Senate seats, of which the 34 in Class III are up for election in 2010. Class III was the first full 6-year term when the Congress began in 1789. Class I served 2 years and Class II served 4 years before getting on the 6-year term schedule.

There are 435 Representatives – all up for election in 2010.

I would love nothing better than to see a minimum of 469 (435+34) new faces in Congress, and I’m not even that particular about party affiliation at this point.

We have some help on insuring this turnover.

Already 12 Senators will definitely be different. That only leaves 88 more to change. Most of those 12 have their terms expiring in 2010 anyway.

Joe Biden’s Delaware seat currently held by interim Ted Kaufman and Barak Obama’s Illinois seat currently held by interim Roland Burris are to be filled by different people – as well as Mel Martinez’s Florida seat, soon to be held by interim George LeMieux.

Ted Kennedy’s Massachusetts’s seat will have a special election in January for his unexpired term.

Kay Bailey Hutchinson of Texas is rumored to be stepping down in a month or so.

Kit Bond of Missouri, Sam Brownback of Kansas, Jim Bunning of Kentucky, Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, and George Voinovich of Ohio are all retiring so there will be new faces here.

Now for the push to replace all 435 House Members.

To reuse a phrase I heard recently, it’s time for a change.
