Total Lunar Eclipse Just Hours Away

In just a few hours, we get to experience a total eclipse of the moon - for anyone who wants to stay up til 2:41 am on the east coast - or just until 11:41 pm on the west coast.

Tonight's event is particularly rare since it falls on the same day as the winter soltice - an occurrence that last happened in 1638. It won't happen again until 2094. That means that we should try to experience this if we can.

The moon is expected to be high in the sky, and this should help viewing it.

This is the way the moon looked about an hour ago as it was rising - already hiding in the trees and practicing for the big shadow a little later.
