Hold Onto To Those Top Jobs

This is bipartisanship at its best - both parites have inadequate leadership.

First, Nancy Pelosi doesn't understand that her leadership is not appreciated. Her ranks are decimated on November 2nd - over 60 of her party's seats go to the opposition. Not to be deterred, she fights to retain her top spot - and gets it. Now she has a chance to lose even more seats in 2012.

But balancing out the equation is Michael Steels, the current head of the Republican National Comittee. He should have exited (voluntarily or not) long ago. He has given very poor representation and leadership to the party and really doesn't understand the message. Still, he wants a second term as well.

Is there something about being at the top that defies reason?

Leadership Is Assumed

Leadership is not given. It is assumed. One can be elected to office. That act does not create leadership. Using the office to guide, give direction, and exercise responsibilty for those in your charge does.

Leadership in business is much the same. We do not have to be the owner or the president to be a leader, but if we do hold those positions leadership is expected. We must take it on and run with it. It is not automatic.

Regardless of our position in the company, we can be a leader. It takes a sense of responsibiltiy for our function and ownership of the outcome. At a listing appointment, we can be a leader. Placing advertising, we can be a leader. Blogging, we can be a leader. Meeting potential customers, we can be a leader. Conducting open houses or manning a sales center, we can be a leader.

Whatever we do, and whatever our business card might say our title or position is, we need to fully aware that our actions can impact others and be willing to take responsibility for those actions. That is leadership.
