Lame Duck Congress Is Like The 2-Minute Drill

The current lame-duck session of Congress is very much like the last 2-minutes of a football game. They have gone along all year without passing a budget, without extending the current tax rates or making them permanent, without addressing the illegal immigration issue, and without approving the START treaty (actually they've had 8 years to do this one). Now in a matter of just a few weeks, they are trying to make up for lost time and give the President everything he wants.

In the first place, the President shouldn't get everything he asks for - no President ever has - until now.

Second, a large number of members currently voting in favor of more spending and regulation should have a guilty conscience because they know they don't represent the will of the people - having lost the election last month.

Third, Congress has already done too much financial damage this year and should just give it a rest. Go home.

There is absolutley nothing on the agenda that can't wait until January 3rd - including the tax rate extensions.

Go home, Congress. Merry Christmas.

Congress Giving Us A Sneak Preview?

The lame-duck session - which was supposed to pass a bunch of unpopular legislation while it still could before the 112th Congress convenes next month with the people elected last month - seems to be falling flat.

The extension of the current tax rates seems to be moving forward although it has taken most of the session and it still hasn't come up for a vote.

It now appears there aren't enough votes to pass the DREAM Act, and the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" repeal failed by 3 votes today. Reid still may try to get it passed another way but most observers are counting it out.

Thus, it would seem that Congress is beginning - even with the lame-duck holdovers who lost their re-election bid or retired - to give us a sneak preview of a more responsible Congress that we elected fot the January term.
