Labor Day signals the end of summer. Officially, fall arrives in 3 weeks, but today is the day that divides the calendar from summer into fall.
As a kid, I remember Labor Day as the last big holiday of summer and reminding us that school was about to start. Now, most schools start in August. I remember marching in Labor Day parades as a Boy Scout. Since moving to Florida, however, Labor Day is often a hurricane day.
Twice, we've had hurricanes actually hit on Labor Day, and it seems we have a few other scares on Labor Day. As a holiday, it's definitely not one of my favorites because of this.
We can only think of those who have evacuated New Orleans and other coastal areas as well as those who have made the necessary preparations to stay in their homes in the path of Gustav. Either way, it's certainly no way to spend a holiday.
It is coming ashore now, and time will tell what a mess it has made.
While many people have a fun day of picnics, parades, and beach outings planned, let's remember those who face uncertainty this day and may have a lot of rebuilding and cleanup ahead of them.
Our prayers go with them.
This is a reminder of Labor Day, 2004 and our encounter with Frances.
