There are so many issues facing our country and us (as citizens and small business people) that it is difficult to keep up with all that is going on.
Our government is definitely on an accelerated spiral that is spinning out of control. Everyday we seem to be moving further away from our 18th century beginnings.
Cap and Trade was passed last year by the House but fortunately sits on a shelf collecting dust in the Senate. Not to worry, the EPA has begun to enact some of its regulatory and taxing provisions in an unconstitutional way - but no one is stopping them. Cap and Trade is based on the notion of global warming that has morphed into climate change, but it's still a hard sell - especially since new information is being released on a regular basis about how the data was fabricated or manipulated to create something that never existed.
Speaking of something that never existed - H1N1 - "Swine Flu." What a colassal much ado about nothing. The UN's WHO got it labeled a pandemic and scared an entire planet. Now millions of unused doses of the vaccine are sitting awaiting the dumpster. Far fewer deaths from swine flu than from a normal flu season.
Then, there's health care. Over 50% of the public did not want it passed. Few if any who voted for it read the bill - which would have been difficult anyway due to its massive size and the fact that provisions in the legislation have yet to be written. Nancy Pelosi wanted it passed "so we can find out what's in the bill." Inexcusable.
Then, there's the new lead abatement program that went into effect last Thursday, and already new regulations are being written to make it even more stringent and costly to comply with. This will be a big cash cow for the government.
Then, there's a proposed financial regulation of Wall Street that the Senate fortunately barred debate on in two separate votes, with the 41 Republican votes and Ben Nelson defeating the proposal. All the while, the Senate investigation of Goldman-Sachs got underway and the Debt Commission convened.
Then, Arizona passes a law which states the obvious and gets much of the country and the Mexican government in an uproar. The law just says that it's illegal for illegal aliens to be in Arizona. People have begun reading all kinds of egregious scenarios into the enforcement of this law, but it's not an "immigration" bill as many claim. It's an illegal residence bill. As such, it's a law enforcement issue - one that the federal governemnt should have taken the lead on. Now Eric Holder - instead of enforcing the laws we already have - wants to strike down the Arizona law. There's leadership.
And all of these issues ultimatley affect and impact us as Realtors, salespeople, small business owners, and citizens. That's why we have to remain current with the issues and sort the misinformation from the facts.
They affect us and how we earn a living. They also affect the spending patterns and disposable income of our consumers.
