You Can Take It With You

Many people have been a little leery of taking a cruise for fear of being out of contact with the rest of the world electronically. Not to worry.

Royal Caribbean has announced that on the "Spendour of the Seas" ship it will provide an iPad in each of their 124 staterooms. The iPads will connect to the ship's activity calendar and allow internet access. Wifi aboard the ship will accommodate passengers anywhere they want to go with their iPads.

So you really can take it with you - the connectivity that is.

Internet Can't Be Shut Down Here - Yet

In the wake of the turmoil in Egypt and Mubarak's decision to shut down the intenet, the question has come up as to how that's possible and can it happen here in America? The answer is to get the ISPs to turn off the juice.

In Egypt the main ISP (internet service provider) is state-owned. That's very easy to control - as they just showed.

In America, thanks to our free enterprise system, there are hundreds of ISPs. They would all have to agree to go dark - not likely. The government may have way of altering the power to them, but I think a total blackout is unlikely.

However, the President is seeking authority for a "kill-switch" that would allow him to somehow disable the internet for national emergency issues. The thought is that in a 9/11-type event that the internet could be taken down. This would be a disasterous move and should never be allowed.

First there is the First Amendment. Morever, the people's right and necessity to communicate - as well as all of the first responders and emergency workers - during the event and its aftermath far outweighs whatever "advantage" the terrorists might gain by keeping the nrwtworks open and operational.

Never give the President or anyone else in government - make that anyone period - this power.
