There are many issues facing our country today. The debt debate is on the front burner, but the illegal immigration issue has been simmering for a long time.
It's called illegal for a reason - notwithstanding the softer term of "undocumented." We have a formal immigration policy that allows people to legally emigrate from their countries of origin and come to the US. We have formal procedures for naturalization as well.
We have heard the argument for years also that illegal immigrants are taking jobs that Americans wouldn't take. Want to bet? With unemployment in double digits many places in this country, a paying job is a job.
Farmers are now proclaiming that they can't stay in business without illegal immigrants to pick their produce. Two responses for that. Use migrants with work visa or downsize or mechanize your business to where you can stay in business. No one is owed the "right" to stay in business - only to be able to start one. If the only way to stay in business is to violate thae law, then that business needs to go away until it can re-emerge as a legal entity.
Congress has passed laws prohibiting the hiring of illegals, but it often goes unenforced. Congress needs to take a far-ranging approach to this - and then see that the Attorney General enforces it uniformly.
This leads to additional issues of providing services for those in this country illegally.
If jobs are unavailable to anyone who is undocumented - people who can't prove their right to be in this country - then we as a country will be helping to seal the borders and stem the tide of illegal immigration because there will be legal enterprise for them here.
