Taking sports superstition to a new level (maybe)

With today being Halloween, with black cats, superstitions and all, I got to thinking how amusing it might have been earlier this week in Philadelphia for either the Phillies or the Rays.

I don’t know that this happened, but it certainly is possible.

Sometimes in sports, a player feels that a certain item of clothing – hat, socks, tee shirt – brings him good luck so he doesn’t change it or wash it as long as his good fortune continues or as long as the team keeps winning.

Conversely, sometimes a player is in a slump or on a losing streak and vows the same thing until they win – a type of reverse psychology.

So remember back to Monday night when the game was played in a soaking downpour in upper 30 degree weather and the soggy filthy condition their clothes must have been in, then there was a night off due to more of the same weather (I don’t know if they practiced or not or if their clothes even dried out if they chose not to wash them), and then the game was completed on Wednesday night.

Can you imagine how it must have felt if anyone was superstitious enough to keep wearing the same thing over these 3 days?
