I see it all the time - I'm sure you do, too. People cutting in line. People demanding to check out before us. People cutting us off in traffic. People asserting themselves as if they are more important than us.
We all get busy, and occasionally we run late for an important appointment. There are times when we would like to "pull rank" and go to the head of the line or get let in to a lane of traffic - even if that doesn't happen. Certainly, we don't make a habit of it. We are respectful and courteous. But there are limits.
I'm not sure if people are so wrapped up in their own little worlds that they don't see us (myopic) or if they are just self-centered and interested in tending only to their own agenda.
Contrast this with the attitude immediately after 9/11. I certainly don't want an event like that to happen again, but people everywhere at that time were so congenial. People genuinely seemed to care about each other. They saw that nothing was so important that it needed to get in the way of relationships - even with people we didn't know. We could sure use a dose of that kindness again.
