Are You Sure Today Is Monday?

The calendar says it's Monday, but it seems like anyday but a Monday. The banks are closed, and so is the Post Office. The Bowl Games are on TV because they couldn't conflict with the last day of the regular NFL season yesterday. Yet, it doesn't feel like New Year's Day either. That was yesterday, and even that didn't feel like much of a holiday.

It's not a regular Monday because many people still aren't back at their desk from the holidays. Tomorrow is a catch-up day, so Wednesday is the first real workday of the new year for many.

I know today is supposed to be Monday, but there sure are a lot of distractions and disguises for it to really be a Monday.

We may have to wait until a week from today to have our first Monday of 2012.

The New Retail Model

We have all noticed how much earlier Christmas decorations seem to be appearing in stores. In fact, some stores are dedicated to nothing else for the entire year.

I have looked at the overall retail model - this is not scientific except for my observations, and it is not official. Nevertheless, this seems to be where retail is going.

Sometime after Thanksgiving as Christmas decorations have been on the shelves for weeks, stores will start stocking up and displaying Valentine's candy, cards, and gifts. Valentine's is the number one candy holiday of the year.

As Valentine's Day draws close - and depending on whether Easter comes in mid March or late April - Easter candy, baskets, finery, and cards go on display. Easter is a huge candy holiday also.

Then Mother's Day slips in there - not as big as the others because the candy element is missing - but big on the cards, flowers, and gifts.

There is a brief lull between mid May and mid June. Then it's time for "Back-to-School." This is a huge buying time for school supplies and clothing. Stores reorganize their floor plans to showcase all of the school supplies - and even bring in extra merchandise that they don't carry at other times of the year.

On that first day of school, Halloween costumes, candy, and fall decorations appear. However, they almost get lost in the shuffle because they are doing double duty with Christmas which starts showing up anywhere from mid-August to early September.

Notice the role that candy plays.

That is what we can look forward to in the world of retail.

No wonder the year seems to be going by so fast

Did I sleep though the rest of November? Is it really December?

I was in Sam’s earlier today and what did I hear being piped throughout the store? Christmas music. We just barely made it through Halloween and an election – and now Christmas music. Are the seasons just a blurr of continuous commercialism?

Do we just skip Thanksgiving this year? Veterans' Day?

Do the holidays – even the made-up ones – exist just for Hallmark and Walmart? When do we get to enjoy them with distinct breaks in between?
