Local High School Football Gets National Exposure

Our high school football season started Friday night with nearly every team in action. There was one game Saturday, and a very visible game yesterday.

Dwyer and Glades Central played an afternnon contest at Glaes Central, but this is one you could watch without leaving your recliner - no matter where you live. The game had a national telecast on ESPN.

Not only that, a terrific pass play by Glades Central that lead to a touchdown - when the receiver actually landed in the endzone with the ball after outjumping the defender - is a semifinalist in the "Play of the Day" being voted on this morning on ESPN Sports Center.

High schools don't use instant replay, but even if they did, this play was still a touchdown. The referees conferenced because the one closest to the play initially thought the receiver had come down just short of the goal line (from where he tossed his beanbag) and rolled in. The video evidence was of a touchdown all the way, and the officiating crew concurred even without benefit of the replay.

Both schools - as well as our whole area - benefitted from the national audience.
