Wishing is not the same as dreaming

Now that we've opened the door on 2009 and taken a one-day step into it, many us have dreams about what we want to accomplish this year - or maybe the next few years if it's a bigger dream.

If we don't have a dream, we should look for one. It inspires us and keeps us motivated. It can be a simple, achievable dream. It doesn't have to involve winning the Nobel prize.

One thing about dreams. They have to be actionable.

Some people tend to confuse wishful thinking with dreaming. There's a big difference. If I want to win the lotto, that's strictly a wish. Nothing in my power can improve my chances unless I buy every single ticket that is issued for that drawing. Otherwise, I am only hoping to win.

My dream might be to win a certain award or to have so many sales. I might want to open another office or expand into another city. Maybe my dream is to reach out to open or found a program for people in my community not being served currently. Those are great dreams. However, if I only sit in my office or at my desk and just daydream about it, it's not going to happen. It requires action.

The first step to accomplishing a dream is setting incremental goals and then working to achieve them.

May 2009 be a year or promise and fulfillment for you.
