We have become such a nation of instant gratification, that we can’t even wait until Election Day to cast our vote. What’s the point? It still doesn’t count until November 4th.
I have very definite, strong feeling about who I want to win the Presidency and other offices, but this post isn’t about the candidates or the outcome. It’s strictly about the election and the election process.
Whose big idea was it that we should get to vote early? I’m not talking about voting absentee – that’s fine, and I’ve done it a couple of times.
I’m talking about going to the elections office or wherever else they are allowing this and voting as if the calendar said November 4th. Well, guess what? The calendar doesn’t say November 4th, so stop this nonsense now.
I voted early once. I felt cheated. Like I had done something wrong. Like I had looked up the answers in the back of the book. Really took the edge off of Election Day.
Look, there are plenty of issues with voting machines malfunctioning, ballots getting misplaced, people voting (or trying to) more than once, with bogus registrations, and other issues of fairness. Why compound them by conducting the election over several days – in effect multiplying the chances of a serious issue occurring?
The election people all over this country need all the time they can get before November 4th to sort through these issues, They don’t need the distraction of early voting.
And here’s the one thing you never hear about. What if someone who voted early – because it was convenient or they went along with some friends – changes their mind because they learn more about the issues or something dramatic happens with one of the candidates in the closing days or hours of the campaign? Can’t go back and change that vote. It’s too late.
Here’s the deal. Everyone votes on November 4th (or whatever day the elections are in the future) or they don’t vote. It’s that simple.
