Campaigning Is Not Leading

President Obama now wants us to think that he's in control of the Gulf oil situation. He is not. He wants us to think that he is concerned about the loss of livelihood in the Gulf region for fishermen and small businesses. He is not. He wants us to think that he supports drilling in the Gulf once this passes. He is not.

He is in full-fledged campaign mode. Everytime I saw him on the news today, he was campaigning - telling people what they wanted to hear - promises all-around. He'll make BP pay for lost business (but he can't). He'll lay down the law to BP on Wednesday after he belittles them in a televised speech tomorrow night, but he has no authority to make them do anything without seizing their company - something he might like to do politically but which he cannot do realistically.

Then he is going to make an impassioned plea to resurrect his cap and trade legislation in Congress as he demonstrates what happens when we rely on oil. All faulty reasoning but with the emotion created by the incident, the campaigning is gaining momentum.

If he really were to lead, he would have laid out a course of action within the first 4-5 days of the incident. It wouldn't have taken 2 months (but you'll recall that it generally takes him over 2 months to decide anything important - think Afghan troop surge). If he were to lead, he would have waived the Jones Act immediately and welcomed the contributions of other countries that offered to help. If he were to lead, he would not be trying one plan after another, If he were to lead, it wouldn't have taken so long for to actually visit the area. If he were to lead, he wouldn't have to be searching for someone to kick.
