Are We OK Being Misled?

The Administration has a news embargo on the BP Gulf oil spill. Such a perfect example of the Administration's transparency. The site of the spill is off limits to reporters. All we can do it take their word for what is going on.

The press (who aren't allowed to visit the site or ask any serious questions about it) and the Administration still point fingers at BP for the slow response, but didn't the President say that nothing could be done by BP that he didn't approve or authorize?

Therefore, we can conclude that the situation exists because the President like it this way. Presumably to create a climate where he can push for a permanent ban on all offshore oil and gas exploration - like Charlie Crist is trying to do in Florida.

In this secretly shot video, look and listen at what is happening as of about 10 days ago and draw your own conclusions.

Better Late Than Never

Finally, we may be seeing some serious progress in the Gulf oil spill cleanup, but the Coast Guard is unimpressed.

The world's largest skimmer ship is in place, anchored near Venice, Louisiana in the Mississippi River. The 1,100 foot long converted tanker ship (outfitted only last month in Portugal) can collect and process 500,000 barrels of contaminated water a day - 21 million gallons of oil mixed with water.

The Coast Guard is evaluating its usefulness before actually giving the go ahread. Get it with it already, unless you have a better plan. The last time we looked, you didn't.

The ship is from Taiwan and has been obtained by BP although no contract reportedly exists between the two.

Was the President holding out on us, or was he unaware this even existed?

Glad BP was aware of this tool.

The Oil Spill - What If?

There are several "what if's" that are not a stretch for this BP oil spill.

(1) What if MMS had done their job and shut down the well because it failed the inspections 4 times before April 20th? Does this make MMS responsible? A civil jury would certainly be within their perview to assess blame and damages, finding MMS entirely or majorly at fault.

(2) What if this was the very first oil spill in the Gulf out of all the 4,000 some wells that there are? Wait a minute, it is the first one.

(3) What if the spill had been caused by a Brazilian, Cuban, Venzuelan, or Chinese well? Would our response be any different? The resultant impact any different?

(4) What if there is such a knee jerk reaction that Obama wants to cancel all drilling and furlogh over 300,000 jobs permanently? So much for his jobs program.

(5) What if Charlie Crist, in an effort to look more like Obama than a Republican Governor that he was elected to be, wants to call a special session of the legislature at a waste of taxpayer dollars in a budget shortfall year to put a proposed Constitutional Amendment on the ballot in November to permanently ban offshore drilling in Florida? What if we just banned Crist from office?

(6) What if this oil spill doesn't even make the top 10 oil spills of all-time worldwide? It doesn't.

(7) What if we let private enterprise fix this and bolster our economy at the same time?

Obama Is Not In Control Of The Oil Spill

Senator George LeMieux of Florida illustrates how the President is incapable of handling the Gulf oil mess.

Maybe Obama really does have another agenda that he hasn't shared. After 64 days, he's not really making any progress in the Gulf.

In fact, his moratorium is set to scuttle his jobs "creation or saving" pledge. But then today, we are told that "safety is more important that jobs." Nice way of covering your tracks.

You'll find this video hard to accept but easy to believe.

BP Blinks

Don't know what went on behind closed doors in the White House, but once again Obama used his muscle to get what he wanted. BP obviously blinked.

BP agreed to fund a $20 billion escrow account. The action was expected, din't know the amount.

Here's the part where BP lost it. They gave in and allowed Obama to set the terms. Kenneth Feinberg, the "Pay Csar," will administer the fund and decide what gets paid.

So much for impartiality. So much for the third-party adminstrator. So much for arm's length. So much for compensating the "legitimate" claims.

Now, the feds have a blank check from BP.

In an earlier post, I said that BP should have said "no." Clearly they didn't.

BP Should Just Say "No"

President Obama is going to use his heavy-handed negotiating techniques today against BP and demand that they write a balnk check. They should refuse.

BP obviously was culpable for the explosion and mess. That's not the issue. They already said they would pay all "legitimate" claims.

But now, Obama sees this as his chance to punish yet another large company and bring it to his knees. A chance to manipulate business into making him look good. He may even be fancing a GM-style takeover.

He used words like "insist" and "demand" and "make them pay." Who does he think he is? He doesn't have this power.

They are paying for the cleanup already. Now he wants them to help him buy votes by paying people that are out-of-work because of this - no matter how loosely they might be affected. What about the millions of other Americans that are out of work? NASA, for instance. Oh, that's right. he did that one.

Thousands of people who are out of work in the Gulf are that way because of his unilateral decision to suspend drilling for 6 months. At the rate he makes decisions, it could be a year or more before this passes - and that will likely be to late for a full recovery.

Obama is President. He is not king or dictator. He cannot demand that a foreign-owned and based company do anything other clean up the mess they caused. Beyond that, BP should stand firm.
