Government-Speak - A Poor Form Of Communication

It's bad enough that Washington has all of the acronyms flying around - what's often referred to as alphabet soup. Every office, bill, program, bureau, department - and in some cases people - are represented by a series of letters or initials as a type of shorthand. Some are actually pronounceable, like HUD, POTUS, FLOTUS, and SCOTUS.

Now, they are intentionally mislabeling bills to make them sound like something they aren't and get Members of Congress - and more importantly, citizens - to support them.

This is not a political discussion on the merits of the proposed legislation - only on the way it is being marketed. This is government-speak at its best.

Take for instance the "Employee Free Choice Act" (HR 1409, S 560). This bill is more commonly called "Card Check." As labeled, it is unnecessary. Employees already have free choice to join or reject union membership by means of a secret ballot. This bill eliminates the secret ballot. Where's the free choice? It isn't there. So label the bill for what it proposes to do and see who supports it that way.

Another bill is "The American Clean Energy and Security Act" (HR 2454). This is called the "Cap and Trade" bill. It is a tax bill. That's it. No energy created or incentivized. No national security measures. Just a tax so say so and let the issues be debated.

Let's leave marketing to the marketplace and go for clarity in government.
