Thomas Jefferson said "Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom."
If we are not true to ourselves - honest with ourselves - then how can we gain the wisdom and knowledge that is around us because in deceiving ourseleves, we aren't fully capable of appreciating what is going on around us.
When we lie, we have to remember our story. One lie begets another until at some point we are so caught up in the lie that we don't even remember the truth. Inconsistencies crop up. Soon our believability is at issue.
If we are to gain wisdom from the experience of others and what we observe in life we have to have an honest approach. We have to strip away the masks and be consistent.
