Florida Preliminarily Votes To Deregulate Some Professions

In a bold move that both encourages small business formation and reduces the size of government, a committe in the Floirda House has voted to deregulate some 30 professions, including surveyors, mold inspectors, and interior designers.

Opponents of this move claim the public is at risk because they could hire an incompetent contractor. That risk is always present - even with a license.

This move, which will eliminate testing and licensing requirements, will make it easier for anyone to establish themselves in those businesses and make it incumbent on those who want to lead those professions to seek professioanl designations and testimonials.

It has yet to pass the entire House and Senate, but its a great start and a boost to free enterprise.

How Can You Have 2 Supreme Courts?

Doesn't Supreme Court mean the top? How then can you have two of them? Is one more supreme than the other?

On the surface sounds kind of silly, but the Florida legislature which convened today is said to be considering a proposed constitutional amendment being offered by Speaker Dean Cannon to have one 5 member court for criminal matters and one 5 member court for civil matters.

Currently the court has 7 members -all 7 of which recently voted that Rick Scott had the authority to return the $2.4 billion for high speed rail - and would need to be reconstituted. Adding 3 members with a staff for each would need to find budgetary room at the expense of other programs.

Will have to learn more. Seems like we rely on courts too much anyway.

Florida Legislature Convenes Tomorrow

The Florida legislature convenes in Tallahassee tomorrow. Like other states, teacher tenure and merit pay will be discussed. It should already be law in Florida but Charlie Crist vetoed SB 6 after initially supporting it. This did as much to defeat him in the Senatorial race as anything. Look for SB 736, its current version, to be passed and signed into law.

A constitutional amendment opting out of Obamacare is likely to passed and put to the voters on the November 2012 ballot. Also a proposed amendment to cap state spending.

Don't look for any bills about high speed rail.

This should be a productive session with a lot of bills considered and passed to restore and maintain fiscal responsibility to the state. We'll see how it plays out.
