Many state governors, such as Chris Christie, are upstaging the President and Congress by showing that they know how to run a government within a budget, deliver what the citizens want, and control spending. Add Florida's Rick Scott to this list.
Rick ran on a platform of creating jobs for the state - not government jobs but opening the playing field for businesses to want to come to Florida and create their own jobs.
Here is what he is proposing to help accomplish this:
- cut school property taxes (already half or more of each household's tax bill) by $1.4 billion - a great start, can go much lower than this
- reduce the corporate tax rate from 5.5% to 3% and eventually eliminate it,
- cut $5 billion from the state budget
- have state employees and teachers contribute 5% of their own money to their retirement system
And in a great show of sincereity and commitment, he has reduced his salary to $1 a year.
The states are showing the way.
