Facebook constantly tweaks their site - not everyday but often.
In the latest set of changes, the status update box is different. If you have a link, you simply include it in your text and it autimatically is converted when the update is posted. It appears as regular text until posted. The "link" icon has been removed - but just from personal pages.
You can also now do a quick survey or poll to involve your friends.

At the bottom of the status update box, which remains hidden until you open the box, you can choose who can see the post (privacy settings) for each individual update. You can also make the post private, and you can disclose your location if you wish.
If you just post a text update and don't want to change any of your settings, nothing has changed. It's business as usual - just with a different look.
