Enough with the 57 blends of gas in America with the changeovers for summer and winter and the downtime at the refineries.
We are one nation, not 50, when it comes to driving. We don’t have different expectations or construction standards for Interstates when we cross the stateline. Why should we for the gas that we put in our cars?
If I buy a tank of gas in one state and drive into another where the air quality standards or octane or other measures are different, do I have to dump my tank of gas at the border and load up on that state’s gas? Of course not. Therefore, there is some degree of folly in all of these standards.
It’s time for one grade of gasoline for all seasons – possibly with different levels of the gas (regular and premium) and possibly with different additives from brand to brand so as to maintain brand identity. But the gas that comes from the refinery needs to be the same basic standard for everyone.
And there needs to be refineries all over so as not to have severe interruptions due to weather phenomena (hurricanes and earthquakes).
Am I missing something? Is this such a radical concept?
