We all know - or at least we've been told - that a watched pot doesn't boil. It's not really important why that seems to be the case - it's just a convenient segue into something this reminded me of. I was having a phone conversation earlier today and the person I was talking with asked me to send them an email, and I did. Now I know it varies by time of day, size of the message, lunar cycle, ISP, and a whole host of other factors, but sometimes the message will arrive instantaneously at the other end (even coast-to-coast), and sometimes it will never get there - even days later. We remarked that hitting the "send/receive" and seeing nothing is a lot like watching the pot boil. Also, this seems to be directly related to the importance of the message and how quickly you want it to get there.
