What if you gave an auction and nobody came? That always a risk in putting on an auction - and I've run my share over the years.
In this case, it's not that no one came - it's that their money didn't.
Yesterday, they were going to auction off the rights to some 2,600 real estate-related "dotcom" domain names (URLs), but it was over before it started.
Apparently the auctioneers concluded that there weren't enough bidders or enough money present to get past the reserve prices that had been set. There had been plenty of interest prior to the event - interest that was not translated into attendance.
Instead, they are now trying to negotiate the sale of some of these names privately.
Most of the names available included the name of a prominent city or town in it.
I remember a few years ago when they said all the good "dotcom" names were taken, and yet I just registered two more today.
Judging from the lackluster interest in this auction, people are still finding names to use that they want.
