Martina McBride Puts Christina Aguilera To Shame

NASCAR 2 / NFL 0 - for the National Anthem. Martina McBride sang the National Anthem to open today's Daytona 500 with the poise, confidence, and clarity or a professional singer. She sang with power, and used good phrasing. She wasn't searching for the words, and she didn't forget any. And she sang it rather than performed it.

On Thursday, a local artist with the last name of Mayo sang the National Anthem to open the Gatorade Duels, and he did a fantastic job as well.

Note to NFL - maybe you should hold auditions next time or be more careful in your selection. Go with someone who actually knows the song and can sing it effectively - minus the vocal gymnastics.

A New Face In Victory Lane

There was a new face today in Victory Lane after a hard fought Daytona 500. Trevor Bayne, in just his second Sprint Cup race ever bested the field in the second overtime and became the youngest winner of the event ever at just 20 years old.

Some of the favorites didn't fare so well - attrition from the ridiculous practice of tandem drafting.

Last year NASCAR listened to the fans and instituted the double file restart and the green-white-checker. I hope enough fans are as upset with this new drafting scheme as I am and push to have this practice stopped. It doesn't test driving skill or race car performance as much as it does luck and finding a fast partner.

Congratulations again Trevor.

NASCAR Roars Back Into Action Tonight

After less than 3 months of inactivity (on the schedule, not for the teams and drivers), NASCAR gets back into action tonight with the traditional season kickoff at the Daytona International Speedway.

Tonight's "Bud Shootout" is unofficial - it only counts for the winner, and only for the money. There are no points involved tonight. Think of it as a one-event preseason, but only 24 drivers will be racing.

Tomorrow is qualifying for the front row for next Sunday's "Daytona 500" and for positions in Thursday's "Duels" - the way the rest of the field is set for the big race.

America's sport is back in action.
