Is Common Courtesy Out Of Style?

Saturday night we went out to dinner. There was a line, as there typically is most nights in our area but especially on Friday and Saturday. As we were going inside to give our name and learn how long the wait was going to be, some other people were going in at the same time. I did the polite thing and held the door for them - they walked right in without even acknowledging the gesture, like they expected it.

Then when we all got inside, the people that we let go ahead of us gave their name to the hostess. Then came our turn. Of course the courteous thing to do when someone holds the door or provides assistance is to return the favor. The polite thing to have done in this case would have been to allow us to leave our name first since we got there first. I fully expected it.

I guess we just should have walked right in ahead of them and let them fend for themselves. That wouldn't have been right, however.

Is common courtesy dying out? Are we just getting too busy to care or to notice?
