Nebraska just passed a law making it illegal to text while driving. Should people be texting while they drive? No. Will the law curtail that? No.
This just gives the police something extra to give someone a ticket for, but it's not going to change behavior appreciably. It should be common sense, but we can't legislate that.
If we want to eliminate distractions from driving, we have to ban daydreaming, tuning the radio, singing along, whistling, looking at the scenery, using the cellphone, talking to passengers, checking the rearview mirrors, looking at the gauges, eating, chewing gum, drinking a soda, or anything else that takes our eyes or focus off the road.
The only way to prevent driver distractions is to have robots do the driving.
