Now, that's commitment!

On this 4th of July, Independence Day, I marvel at the bold commitment of the 56 men who were in that room in Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1776.

Not only did they have the wisdom and foresight to see that things needed to be changed, they had the courage to stand up and lay it all on the line.

These were not people who had nothing better to do than serve a few weeks in Congress. These were some of the most affluent, important, and influential men of their day. They had plenty to lose by declaring independence - including their lives.

The closing line in the Declaration of Independence declares and affirms their commitment to each other and to the cause they were promoting:

"And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor."

Now, that's commitment!
