Sitting Here Fending Off Cancer

Drinking coffee has numerous health benefits. I've discussed many of them in past posts.

Now, it seems that drinking 3 or more regular (not decaf) cups of coffee a day is found to ward off BCC (basil cell carcinoma) - the most common form of skin cancer.

It is reported to reduce the incidence in men by 9% and women by 20% compared to people who drank one cup or less per month.

No results were demonstrated for melanoma. Still, this is one more reason to keep that elbow bent and the cup full of hot dark coffee. And it tastes so good, too.

I Missed National Coffee Day

Why didn't somebody tell me 2 days ago? National Coffee Day was yesterday, September 29th. It's going in my Outlook now for future years. I won't miss it again.

Many stores offered free cups of coffee yesterday. I could have spent my day driving from store to store and enjoying the day with coffee in hand.

Oh well, no sense in crying over a missed coffee opportunity, but I hope this doesn't happen again.

If you know of any coffee promotions from national stores or anything like National Coffee Day, be sure to let me know. I try to watch for days like this, but guess I missed it.

Coffee Drinkers Rejoice - Again

Everytime there is a new study done on drinking coffee, there are positive health benefits reported.

I really think that these studies are done to "prove" that drinking coffee is somehow bad for us, but every study adds at least one more benefit. And nearly always it's the regular, full-strength, high-test, leaded, caffeinated kind. Any brand will do, as Mr. Food says.

This time, Harvard, in a study of 50,000 women found that drinking 4-5 cups of coffee a day for "middle-age" women lowered their depression and seemed to test stronger than many medications typically used for thios purpose.

This makes at least a half-dozen advantages for drinking coffee - that we know of. I'm sure there are many more to come. Waiting for that next study.

Good News, Coffee Prices Ebbing

Good news for coffee drinkers. Prices are coming down. Like gas prices, they are trickling down after a major run-up - but a reduction is a reduction.

Smucker's (Folger's, Millstone, and Dunkin' Donuts) announced a reduction last week, and Kraft (Maxwell House and Yuban) is following with a similar 6% reduction now.

Starbucks, Peet's Coffee and Tea, and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters are other major players that we should watch for reductions also.

A Different Type Of Second Hand Smoke

Forget about the smoking discussion for the usual reasons - and whether it should be allowed in public places.

Starbucks doesn't allow smoking in its restauranys for an entirely different reason. It has nothing to do with its patrons - not directly anyway,

In Russia, where Starbucks has 50 stores, they ban smoking in their establishments. Smoking is very common in Russia and not typically banned or prohibited in stores.

Why would they do this and how can they get away with it? It turns out that the coffee beans are porous and absord the cigarette smoke - obviously affecting the flavor of the beans.

This is a completely different argument against second hand smoke.

Another Benefit Of Drinking Coffee

There have been several reports over the past few months on health advantages of drinking coffee - regular coffee. There have been no negative findings, despite scientists trying hard to find some.

Now, yet another benefit. The very nasty super-bacteria "MRSA" is less of an issue for coffee and tea drinkers than non-drinkers. Especially for nasal borne contraction of the bacteria, coffee and tea drinkers are found to be half as likely to contract the bug.

The coffee and tea contain antimicrobial properties that are important versus susceptibility to MRSA.

The Coffee News Keeps Getting Better

Coffee now appears to have even more medicinal qualities than already reported. Probably won't be long before the FDA tries to get some control over the miracle beverage.

I already posted about study after study that attempted to prove how bad coffee was for us - only to show that it was better for our health that we had even known.

Now, a new study by the University of South Florida is showing that a particular, unique property in coffee (that they haven't quite identified yet) - and only in real, caffeinated coffee - wards of Alzheimer's disease. It may be the caffeine and a combination of other compounds, but decaf does not have the same effect,

Researchers suggest drinking coffee in your 30s, 40s, and 50s for this protection - since it takes years for the disease to develop and beginn showing signs. However, beginning later in life or upping your intake later in life also seemed to work.

There's just no beating a good cup of coffee.

Coffee - The Wonder Drink

I love coffee, and it is great to know that it loves me back. Study after study confirms its value.

Apparently some people belive that coffee is bad for you so they have set out to prove that it shouldn't be drunk - especially the caffeinated kind.

Coffee is a well established anti-oxidant so it has that going for it.

Recently there was a study than proved that coffee does not raise your blood pressure - even by drinking several cups a day. Then they showed that coffee inhibits certain breast cancer formation. Now they have found that men who drink coffee lower there risk of developing prostate cancer - more coffee is better than less.

This just keeps getting better. If I didn't already enjoy coffee so much I'd have to start drinking it.

And for me the only way to drink it is straight out of the pot. Anything else is a "coffee drink" rather than coffee.

Wonder what the next study will prove?
