John Wooden, formerly coach of the UCLA basketball program, has died at 99. Coach Wooden, as he was called by everyone who knew him, was also known as the "Wizard of Westwood" (although he personally disliked this nickname).
He put college basketball in the limelight. He demonstrated that the game could be coached. Along the way, he developed such talents as Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (Lew Alcindor, at the time).
He won 620 games in his coaching career, including 88 in a row over 4 seasons. He won 10 national championships.
He was the first person ever inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and coach.
Coach Wooden was often quoted. Here is one I like: "Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do."
He will be missed.
