Doctors' offices have something in common with casinos

If you've ever been to a casino, or talked to anyone who has or even watched a movie with one in it, then you'll know that there are no windows and no clocks. That's intentional - they want you to lose track of time and focus on playing their games.

I had really thought about it before today, but doctor's office don't have clocks in them either - at least the ones I've been in recently.

Maybe that partially explains why doctors run behind schedule - or that we're not supposed to notice. A few weeks ago I arrive on-time for my appointment and discovered that the three appointments scheduled before me were still waiting in the reception area - not a good beginning. Finally I get in to see the doctor some 55 minutes later.

Today, a similar story. I arrive on-time and sit down. I start reading and only get past a couple of pages before my name is called. Wow, progress. Then I sit in the examination room. It still takes 55 minutes past the appointment time for the doctor to come in.

So, other than paying out lots of money at both places, doctors have something else in common with casinos.
