Remembering Walter P. Chrysler

With the events of this week for automaker Chrysler which have lead it into Chapter 11 and new operational management by the Italian company Fiat, I can't help but wonder what Walter P. Chrysler's vision was for his company when he founded it 84 years ago.

Chrysler isn't just a made-up name for a company. It is the name of the man who created the company.

Apparently Chrysler took over the existing Maxwell Motor Company in a Lee Iaccoca style revamping (which he also had done at Willys) and renamed it the Chrysler Corporation. He built his first car a year earlier in 1924.

So we have seen a legendary pioneer in the auto industry attach his name to a car company that rose to become one of the Big 3 auto makers, only to be sold to the German company Daimler a decade ago and now to an Italian company as it teeters on dissolution.

Maybe he would have foreseen this and embraced it, but I rather doubt that this is what he had in mind.
