There was a time not too long ago that a businessman would need to wear a suit and tie, or a jacket and tie, or a sweater and tie - or something and a tie - if they wanted to make a good first impression.
Then we Boomers grew up and figured out it wasn't that much fun wearing a tie. Enter business casual.
Notice how much more at ease President Bush or any other politician or business leader look when they shun the tie? They don't lose any of their authority, only the formality. I suppose that there are times when ties are expected - I just avoid those times and places.
I last wore a tie in November, 2001, and I don't plan on wearing another any time soon because that would mean that I'd have to go out and buy one. That's right, I gave them all away.
Don't get me wrong, some of my best friends wear ties. I just choose not to.
