Firefox Is Down For The Count

I have quit using Firefox several time since they started monkeying with it back in 3.0 days a couple of years ago. They've had many, many versions since then. Most were not improvements, and some have been counterproductive,

As a result, I have stopped using it multiple times and written a few blog posts about the difficulties. Some people aren't affected with I'm experienceing, but many are - judging by the comments.

It is constantly going "non responsive" and it won't load a new page or refresh without moving the mouse around until the page loads. Stop moving the mouse and the upload stops also - indefinitely.

Because of issues with other browsers - especially with Active Rain - I've always gone back to firefox. Maybe the issue is with Active Rain.

Unless something dramatic happens with a new release, I'm done with firefox. Today it is officially removed from my computer - again.

The only advantage firefox offers over other browsers - and this admittedly is a biggie - is that it remembers the names of previous photo titles and links. I'm just going to have to live without this. Right now, Chrome seems to be doing the best, even with the titling shortcomings. At least it is responsive and posts fairly instantly.

By the way, the way composed on Chrome. I didn't have time to wait for firefox.

Update On Browsers

I posted earlier in the week about my experience with browsers and my decision to dump Firefox 6. In fact, Firefox has been deleted from my computer. Maybe it will return later, but there were constant issues - slow response, freezing up, and timing out, among others.

So I set out in search of another browser. All came up short, but one is clearly ahead of the others. The winner is Safari. It's a little quirky with AR, but the response is the fastest of any of the browsers, and all functionality is there.

Internet Explorer (IE9) wouldn't let me post. It's fine for general browsing and is friendly enough, but I wrote a few posts and hit "submit." As soon as I did, I received an error message that I needed to add a title and content. What I wrote had been erased. That wouldn't do.

Google Chrome was good for awhile, but it won't show YouTube videos in the post until after you've posted and refresh. It's there, but doesn't show before the refresh. AR knows about this issue and hasn't been able to correct it. There is also an issue with footers.

Opera is not bad, but it doesn't allow copy and paste of links and has a few issues with general ease of use.

That leaves Safari. It doesn't remember previous post names like Firefox, but otherwise is the best browser for AR - for now. And it has a huge bookmark library.

Firefox Is Flickering

Firefox was the browser of choice for several years, but they have created one too many updates for me.

Since they launched 4.0 it's not the same - and you can't go back. The site fails frequently and it is very sluggish. I no longer recommend Firefox, and I am migrating my bookmarks to other sites. IE 9 is much better than any of the earlier versions (unlike Firefox 4.0 and IE 8 that regressed over earlier versions). I also like the new version of Google Chrome - while not caring for their earlier attempts.

Active Rain supposedly is designed for optimal use with Firefox, but it works great with Chrome. Seems to work OK with IE also. In earlier versions of IE, pictures wouldn't upload.

Too bad that Mozilla grew too fast with this release. Maybe later I'll come back.

I Still Am Not A Fan Of Chrome

I tried Google Chrome when it first came out. It was pretty and flashy. Didn't think it rose to IE or Firefox except for a couple of features.

Tried it again a couple of times since - just to see if I was missing anything.

Tried it again over the weekend as my Firefox was giving me issues, and it was suggested that I try Chrome. Did that. I'm done again. Back to Firefox.

Even if I have to deal with one or more crashes a day on Firefox, it's still easier to navigate than Chrome. Don't care much for the bookmarks on Chrome either. While Firefox continues to page over as you open more tabs, Chrome just scunches them all onto the same screen - you can't see any information, just the really small tabs.

The last straw came just a little while ago. I had 20 or so windows (tabs) open on Chrome, and I clicked a link. It opened a new browser and shut down the other one. Everything lost. No way to recover like Firefox which gives you the choice of saving all the tabs and starting them up again.

Maybe someday Chrome will get their act together, but I don't have time to wait. Back to Firefox unless someone can point me to something better.

Active Rain Members Come Through For Me

Thursday, I started trying to get my firefox (3.0.11) to work correctly after it just stopped functioning. I posted about my frustrations and got some great comments. The best advice came from Gail MacMillan. I wish I had some type of prize to give you - though this was not a contest.

Firefox just stopped running. I downloaded and reinstalled an earlier version (3.0.4) as well as the current upgrade (3.0.11) that was working before it let me down. Interestingly it still works on 2 other machines that I have.

So, I went back to IE 7 - it wasn't as horrible as I remembered, but within 5 minutes of opening a few windows I got a "runtime error" and everything went away. That was close - I could have lost some work.

Google Chrome was suggested, so I used it for a couple of days. Not bad actually - better than when it first came out several months ago. Still quirky.

Then today, Gail suggests firefox 3.5 beta. It works, I'm using it now, and it is so close in the size of the published material to IE that all is well.

Another success story in the annals of AR.

Calling All Firefox Experts

Last night firefox just went away. Oh, the desktop and quick launch icons were still there, but it wouldn't load. Click on - nothing - except that it was running in the background and not responsive. Deleted 3.0.11 (the version I had been using), except that I had to stop it in processes before it would let me continue with the uninstall.

I've redownloaded and reinstalled firefox 3.0.4 and 3.0.11 so many times Ive lost count. Only once - long enough for me to make one comment - did it load before it went non responsive.

Unless I can find a solution, It's back to IE 7 - where I am right now. Already been kicked off once for "runtime error" - whatever that is. And oh, IE is sooooooooooo slow.

Any ideas? I've done the defrag, msconfig, and all the other stuff that I could think of.
