One, by one, the big box stores are falling or pulling back. Some thrive, most do not. The home centers and some home furnishing stores are doing well. The electronics and book stores are not.
In the past few years, we have seen Linens & Things, Circuit City, and CompUSA close down nationwide. Circuit City maintains an online store only, and CompUSA came back much smaller. Now Borders is announcing store closings upon store closings.
The latest big box company to voice difficulties in keeping the doors open is Best Buy. They cite the internet shopping experience that has eliminated the need for large showrooms with dozens of choices.
Don't look for any new entries into the national or regional big box arena. Some of the successful brands will continue to expand and find new markets, butother existing ones may falter.
The national big box stores served a need and they anchored the development of many shopping centers. That time seems to have passed, but the stores they have vacated are being absorbed and reinvented by local merchants..
