Big Box Bookstores Fading Away

Have the big box bookstores outlived their calling? I think so.

Borders just filed for bankruptcy and announced 200 store closings. Look for all the others to follow within a couple of years.

Barnes & Noble is likely next.

From what I see, these large box stores are a place to scan the new releases, sit in an easy chair and read a book then put it back, check out a magazine article without purchasing it, have a cup of coffee, and visit with friends. If you want to order a book - because they can't carry everything - there's Amazon and the internet.

In many ways it is like a well stocked library, but you can't make money or stay in business for long with that kind of business model.

Speaking of Amazon, they have books and ebooks to order 24 hours a day - with next day delivery if you want. Doesn't require using any gas, getting dressed up, or leaving home.

I also think that this is a great time for the small boutique bookstores much like you find at an airport.

Sort of the ebb and flow of big box retailers. They sure leave a lot of opportunities for repurposed buildings in their wake.
