Arizona Showing The Way

The Arizona Legislature is tackling some big issues. It passed a bill to allow carrying of concealed weapons on college campuses in the State. Jan Brewer vetoed it - not because she opposed the idea but because it was poorly written. Try again Legislature and consult with the Governor this time.

It also passed a bill requiring Presidential candidates to prove that they are US citizens before being allowed on the ballot in Arizona. In concept a great idea - in practice poorly attempted. Jan Brewer was right to veto this bill also. "Proof" included many documents, including a birth certificate. Affadavits and other materials were acceptable. In the end, nothing would have been gained and the spirit of the law could not be met.

They also voted to place a referendum measure on the 2012 ballot to prohibit all public financing of election campaigns - to rescind permission that was granted in 1998. This is a great move. Hope the voters approve it. It is the fiscally responsible thing to do. Right now people are financially supporting candidates they don't believe in, in addition to or instead of their favorite - much like many PAC and union members.

Arizona is showing the way in some tough areas - as is Florida, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Georgia, and Ohio,

Either States are stepping up, or we are hearing about it more - I vote for the first one.
