Airlines Take Backdoor Federal Bailout

With the FAA reauthorization stalled in Congress for now, the federal taxes that are tacked onto an airline ticket that make a reasonably priced ticket increase by 25% or more for the total charge are no longer being collected.

Airlines estimate that this amounts to $200 million a week in taxes extra revenue they don't have to collect and pass along to the feds.

The consumers should be lining up to get these reduced airfares - but there's a major catch. The airlines have pulled a "gotcha."

Only Alaska, Hawaiian, and Spirit airlines have decided not to stick it to the customer.

The airlines are charging the same as they did before and pocketing the "tax" money. Say a ticket costs $225 with $60 in taxes. The airlines are still charging the total of $285 - a built in price increase while seemingly not adjusting their fares at all.

Airlines will take a federal subsidy anyway they can get it, and this is working great for them now.

Wouldn't it be refreshing for a Delta or a Southwest to step up and proclaim that their savings is our savings?

They say things happen in 3s

They say things happen in 3s. Here's an example of just that - by the way, no one got hurt.

On the airplane last night, they were pulling that big heavy cart down the aisle to serve refreshments. Hold on – nothing happened, yet.

I was sitting on the aisle. As the flight attendant parked the cart next to my seat and began dispensing beverages, she managed to spill some ice on my foot – no problem – didn’t even leave a mark.

Not long after that, the soda she was pouring fizzed over the top of the cup and onto my pants. At least I was on my way home so not a big issue.

Ready for number 3? Well, they move the cart up the aisle and right into my shin. Fortunately it was just a glancing blow.

Well, there is it – all 3 of them. Not serious but definitely amusing.
