It Took Long Enough

It only took 10 years, but United Airlines has finally done the right thing. While it hasn't used flight numbers 93 or 175 since Tuesday, September 11, 2001 (until a Monday accidental posting), they have not been officially retired until now. What should have been an instant response to honor the memories of the passengers and crew has been an unofficial observance.

NOAA retires the names of hurricanes as soon as they become a devasting or killer storm - never to used in the rotation again.

On Monday, the flight numbers from that fateful day were inadvertently posted online for Continental flights - giving pause to many airline employees. Continental and United merged recently but still maintain separate operations.

American Airlines has long since retired flight numbers 11 and 77.

While it took 10 years - and even a mistake - to get it done, the memory of those flights has been preserved. Those numbers will no longer be used.
