Odd Sense Of Propriety

Lisa Murkowski, the current Senator from Alaska, and loser of the Republican primary, is continuing with her "sore-loser" mentality. She shouldn't even be on the ballot. She had her bite at the apple in the primary, and her party rejected her in favor of Joe Miller. Not to be deterred, she ran as a write-in, and with the help of the Alaska Supreme Court was able to hand out cheat-sheets to early voters on how to spell her name (and the other 399 registered write-in candidates).

Now, although it appears she may actually win the election which was held 9 days ago, she is complaining because Joe Miller's team is challenging some of the votes she received as not counting.

Maybe Alaska should just forego the primaries and forego the qualifying and just have anyone who wants to run register at the elections office and do the whole election as a write-in. They should have all the votes tallied, (and recounted and recounted) and be able to determine a winner by the time the next election came around.

Alaskans would seem to deserve a better process than this.

Now That The Shoe Is On The Other Foot

The triumvirate of Obama, Pelosi, and Reid had no trouble telling the Republicans in Congress to either get on board or get out of the way. Now that they have lost the House in a huge way and are essentially equal in the Senate, they still want to get their agenda passed so they are telling Republicans - and America - that they are interested in using good ideas from both parties.

Translation - if Republicans will bend to Democratic, liberal ideals, they will get it passed for them.

Now that they aren't the bully, they have changed their tactics to ostensibly being interested in Republican ideas - with their intended net result being essentially the same.

Their programs didn't work the past 2 years. No reason to assume they will now. Let's try the change we voted for this time.

Business As Usual For The White House

Tuesday was just a small blip on the radar screen for the President. Clearly he is detached from the events of this week. His speech yesterday did not connect with anything the voters had shouted at the ballot box. He just said he needed to communicate better. That is not his problem. He is so transparent.

Today, he invited Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader of the Senate to drop on by the White House for a "get-to-know-you" with Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and himself. They want to tell Mitch how the game is going to be played.

If I'm not mistaken, Pelosi is a lame duck leader, and Reid is leader in name only. Well, it's Obama's show anyway - always has been.

Mitch told him no. Fantastic. Bet he doesn't hear that too often. Told the President that if he'd like to compromise and come on over to the values the Republicans have that he'd be interested.

The election is already paying dividends.

The Election Is Now Complete

Here in Florida, we had great election results - as far as small businesspeople like me are concerned. First, Marco Rubio dominated his Senate race and won handily. He has so much character to take to the Senate, and is an outspoken proponent of free enterprise.

Second, Allen West survived a vicious campaign of attacks by Ron Klein and will bring honor and his military-bearing to the Congress from District 22.

Third, Dan Webster ousted Alan Grayson in District 8 so we won't have to hear or see his antics anymore.

Fourth, we defeated Amendment 4 which would have required that all comprehensive plan changes be voted on in a general election before approval - adding months and thousands (perhaps millions) of dollars to any redevelopment proposal - and tying up land for sellers.

Fifth, Adam Putnam, a real farmer with an agricultural heritage, won Agriculture Commissioner.

Finally, after waiting all night for some ballots to be reviewed and counted by hand here in Palm Beach Count ("home of the chad"), Rick Scott was just declared our next Governor. He and Jennifer Carroll, as Lt. Governor, will make a great team.

There were many other great outcomes of this election statewide, but these victories stand out.

Americans Don't Want Compromise

The political pundits are still talking today - while people are at the polls voting - on how Americans want compromise. They don't get it.

We want principled action - not a give-up and give-in. The people voting for Barney Frank, Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and the other Democratic incumbents don't want them to come off their position at all. They want more spending, more programs, more government largese.

The Tea Party absolutely doesn't want compromise, and the sentiment of the independents and the Silent Majority in America is that they don't either. They don't want a health care bill with a few of the most egregious provisions excised to create a "health care lite." They don't want the increase in government spending decreased from a 10% increase to just a 6% one. They don't want taxes increased for some and decreased or held the same for others.

Compromise has it's place, but not this time around. We won't tolerate it. No one really wants it except the media and the pundits. Unless the new Congress resembles the current one in terms of leadership and  idelology, there have to be cuts - and huge ones - in programs, entitlements, staffing, budgets, and taxes.

If ever there was a time for boldness in Washington, this is it. The President has had his time to be bold, and Congress has meekly given him everything he wanted except final passgae of cap and trade (the House did, the Senate hasn't).

Now it's our time, and compromise is not the slogan. Reversal of bad programs is. Adherence to the Constitution is. Non-deficit spending is.

We'll soon see how America voted, and whether they returned the big spenders to Congress or decided that it was time for real change.

Three Cheers For The Red. White, & Blue!

It's a great day to be an American. Here's 2 cheers to help us celebrate:

- Cheer #1 - It's election day. Our system still works, and it appears that we may be headed back to a more sensible, fiscally responsible Congress. The support for candidates at all levels of government show that people are tired of all the regulation and spending - especially since it has only exacerbated an economic sluggishness.

- Cheer #2 - The Girl Scouts announced that their uniforms are still going to be made in the US. What a travesty that would have been to have them made out of the country. Reminds me of a plastic American flag I got a few years ago at a 4th of July celebration with "CHINA" stamped on it.

- Cheer #3 - The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals reversed a ruling that a lower court judge had made and left in tact indefinitely the current policy of "don't ask, don't tell" for the military. President Obama said he wants Congress to eliminate the ban. This is as it should be. Regardless of your position on the issue, one judge should not have the power to do what Congress and the President had not done. No one elected that judge, and he clearly was way outside his constitutional duty.

There are more positive indications that the momentum is shifting here at home, and we dodged a big one in the skies the other day.

Have a great day America.

I've Earned It

I still remember the exchange between Col. Jessup and the Court in "A Few Good Men" about having earned the title to be addressed a certain way.

It seems Barbara Boxer has let it go to her head. Here's a funny little parody:

After Tuesday, let's give her the title of former Senator. I'm quite sure she has earned that distinction.

Why Do We Bother To Have Primaries?

Why do we even bother to have primary elections other than they are good sources of revenues for radio and TV stations as well as printers? Supposedly, candidates interested in the office run in the primary to be selected by their party and then face the other candidate in the general election.

Now we have people like Lisa Murkowski in Alaska who lost the primary but is mounting an extensive, and possibly successful, bid to win as a write-in candidate. She had her chance. She lost. Too bad. get over it. There's always next time. Don't understand how she can be polling so high now. Even the Supreme Court of Alaska is on her side saying that early voters must be given a piece of paper with her name on it to write-in on the ballot if they so choose.

Then in Florida we have Charlie Crist who saw that he couldn't win the Republican primary so he dumped everything an became an independent.

Either we are ging to have 2 campaigns - a primary and then a general, or we are just going to have one election. This non-acceptance of the will of the people to do an end-run and manipulate the general election is just not working. Florida is even considering a "Sore Loser Act" which will preclude people (like Charlie Crist) from running in the general election if they have been defeated in the primary.

I sure hope sanity prevails and we elect people who love the Constitution and agree to obey it, but I have my doubts - given what I'm seeing.

Blaming The Past Is No Way To Move Forward

It is amazing that people like Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and Joe Sestak keep pointing fingers at George Bush for the economic mess - as they describe it - that we are in, as if he single-handedly did it. The Democrats have been in control of Congress for 4 years and the White House for 2 years. Things have only gotten worse on their watch in terms of unemployment and the national debt. That can't be laid at Bush's feet.

Another thing, weren't all 3 of them and many more who try this lame tactic in Congress at the time? And didn't they all vote for extreme spending and TARP? How can something be Bush's fault when they were the one's who passed it? Bush had only 2 faults in the economic blowup at the end of his term - he didn't veto anything and he relied on bum advice.

But all that is past. Obama and the current Congress has got us squarely mired in the mess that we are in. For anyone to give credence to the false assertions that this goes back to the Bush administration is to not understand Congress' role in this. For anyone to give members of Congress and the President a pass on this because they "inherited it" is totally out of line. They are 100% responsible for where we are now and are doing precious little to resolve it.

Don't fall for the blame game. Vote the rascals out. The clock is ticking.

The Home Stretch - One Week To Go

One week from today, we will know who our next 435 Members of Congress and 36 Senators are for the 112th Congress. A few we know already due to uncontested races.

It's been a long journey; however this year's race has been extremely exciting. It's a game-changer.

I don't think the average American has taken such an active role in voicing their opinion and campaigining for change than in this campaign because the direction of the Congress has been so wrong. It can't continue. Most Americans recognize this and they have mobilized to change it.

And if you're a candidate being given the chance to serve for the next 2 years or 6 years (in the Sneate), be keenly aware that you are on probation. If you fall in line with the Washington way of doing business, you will be actively and vocally campaigned against next time around. Show us that you value free enterprise, America, our economy, and our Constitution.

Oh, one more thing. Please don't promise to create jobs. We know that you can't. Just make it possible for us to do it. While you're at it, eliminate thousands of federal jobs. We might even be able to hire some of them in our small businesses.
